Our real-time patient's hair transplant healing process
To all patients and potential patients:
The healing process of the procedure is very straightforward if you follow the instructions.
The best patients get the best results.
The day you leave your procedure, the tips of the grafted area will be above the surface of the skin.
This will appear unsightly to you after. However, it goes away rather quickly.
The tip of the hair graft will eventually scab, and crust over.
You begin a twice daily washing regimen on your third day postoperatively.
The tips of all of the grafted portion will eventually slough off, and the hair follicle will fall out and go dormant as well.
Many patients think their grafts are falling out, because it looks like a complete graft.
However, this is the normal process of all of the newly transplanted hair, it goes dormant.
Usually it takes about 7 to 10 days for the smaller grafted area to slough off.
These are normally the one hair grafts, which are in the frontal hairline, which gives the naturally looking appearance.
The follicular units grafts, that usually contain between 2 to 3 hairs follow immediately after the single hair grafts. Those usually fall out around the same time between 7 to 10 days.
What we do here at Great Hair Transplants is distinct between other hair transplant organizations in the industry.
We use a graft that will contain 2 to 3 of those follicular unit bundles in a single slit graft in order to help maximize the density.
These grafts that have more hair may take a few days longer to slough off. They usually start sloughing off around the 10 to 14 day range.
It’s not unusual for some patients to heal faster, and for others to take longer. These are just averages.
The average hair transplant will take anywhere between eight weeks to six months to initially start to grow. Average growth starts at around three months.
Once the transplanted hair begins to grow, it usually grows at the normal pace of hair growth which is around a half inch per month.
Larger cases, usually take a full 18 months to see final results.
You will see improvements throughout the process, however, the nine month point for most patients is only about halfway through the process.
Once the hair fully grows out at the 18 month point, it will continue to improve after that. The initial hair that grows is not in its adult phase as of yet. As the new grafted hair grows and strengthens, it will layer and be more manageable. So you will still see some subtle improvements in the months to follow the 18 month final result point.
The hardest part of a hair transplant… believe it or not, is waiting for it to grow. Be patient and the results will come!

Is a Shaved Head Necessary?!
No, but...
Ryan wanted to give Dr. Bolton the best possible environment for hair transplantation. Although shaving one's head is not a requirement for this procedure, surgery time can be accelerated when there is less hair in the way. Most patients do not choose this option. In this case Ryan did.
